On visiting the island that ruled the World

At last, a trip to the UK. Totally dedicated to seeing this island (and maybe one or two in Scotland, but all UK), and avoiding the hassle of continent hopping, which is typical for us. We began in London. So that's where I'll start the blog.

We stayed at Bluebells in Notting Hill. It might have been a clue--within a block or two of Notting Hill Gate, we came across Churchill Arms. Actually, we were headed into another pub, standing on the corner talking about it, when a man stopped, turned and said, "I head the word Pub. Well, you don't want that one. Down the street you'll find Churchill Arms. It's a real pub."

He was right! The food was Thai (well, the English version), the beer was barely carbonated at all. Chamber pots and lanterns hung from every inch of the ceiling. The tables were low, the seating soft, and you felt like your living room had been transported, with new friends and pints at your elbow.

It was a brilliant way to begin our journey!

Which actually began early that day with a 5:55 am plane arrival at Heathrow. Bluebells generously let us stow our bags, and we walked down the sidewalk of pristine white row houses to a commercial area for organic breakfast and friendly conversation with our waitress.

Just down the street, a florist was working on arrangements at tables outdoors. He was the least friendly person we met along the way, and would not let me shoot him actually putting arrangements together (which is too bad really--he was quite good), but said I could shoot the stock. Here is the result.

That's it for now. Much more later ... Cheerio!
